Applications are open for students from partner universities of the Global July Program 2022. Global July will take place from July 18 to 29, distributed between online and on campus courses, conditioned by Covid-19 pandemic biosecurity limitations. In this edition, 33 courses will be offered in both undergraduate and graduate levels, in five languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese for foreigners. Applications for partner institutions’ students are open until April 28. In order to participate, students must fill out this form (opens in new window) by the deadline. Participation in Global July is free of charge and students are awarded a certificate in English for their courseload.
In 2022, Global July adopts a guideline, based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The 17 goals established in the SDGs are present in the courses, in the areas of Literature and Arts, Biological Sciences and Health, Humanities and Applied Social Sciences, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Created in 2017 by UFJF’s International Relations Office (DRI), the program brings
together students and professors from several countries, and places UFJF as an interesting destination in Brazil, capable of offering seminars for professional development, study and research in periods of extracurricular activity. With a pioneering format in the country, the program allows UFJF students to experience internationalization at home and in collaboration with students from several countries and cultures.
Howard University (USA) professor, Dr. Clement Akassi, who participated in previous editions, emphasizes the importance of internationalization promoted by the program. “Global July makes a significant contribution by internationalizing knowledge, teaching and scholarship. Which creates a sense of global exchanges, right there at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora. It is a unique experience in academia, enabling international connection between professors / scholars and students; and between professors / scholars themselves. Over the years, the team has shown outstanding organization skills and availability. It’s definitely exciting and worth the effort to be part of this experience”, points out Akassi, who last edition offered a course on Pensamientos y Prácticas Womanistas, on
African Studies.
Reception
In order to welcome international participants, volunteer students developed, in partnership with DRI, the Buddy Project, which supports the demands of everyday life in the city and in the university, such as helping find accommodation, as well as promoting gatherings and social activities. Argentinian student Azul Borga studies Psychology at Universidad Nacional de Córdoba and considered the reception of the students a standout for those who come from other countries. “The buddy is wonderful! All the people who welcomed me were very friendly and very attentive to anything I needed. I learned the language through the lessons, but also with the peers, who always had a lot of patience, in the day-to-day life, while they spoke. I loved the activities outside the campus, which allowed me to make friends from all over the world. Coming to Brazil was my first trip alone and all the personal growth made Global July one of the best experiences of my life.”
The courses, taught in several languages, take place at UFJF Science Center, a scientific outreach complex with a planetarium, an astronomical observatory, museums, and exhibitions. The building has more than three thousand square meters and capacity to receive over 700 people, bringing science closer to the community, expanding knowledge beyond the walls of the University. The place is one of the largest centers of scientific outreach in the
state of Minas Gerais and is also home to the largest didactic study center in Astronomy in Brazil. It houses state-of-the-art technology and equipment and is open to both the academic community and the citizens of Juiz de Fora.
Guided tours
This year tourist destinations will be offered by the junior company of the UFJF Tourism Undergrad Course, Inova Rumos, partner of the Global July Program. The aim is to introduce international students to places of interest near the city of Juiz de Fora. The destinations seek to cover different areas of knowledge so that they can enrich the student experience at Global July. Two destinations will be offered: the historic city of Petrópolis, that recounts the imperial period of Brazilian society and Serras de Ibitipoca, suggestive immersion in nature and biodiversity in Brazil.
Dean of International Relations, Dr. Anderson Bastos, leaves a message for students at UFJF’s partner universities: “We want to welcome those students and reinforce that, although shorter than previous editions, Global July 2021 is being prepared with the same care as in previous years and that our goal is to hold another successful event with great learning opportunities in several areas of knowledge.”
