Focus: Modern Languages
In this day and age, we have multiple opportunities to enjoy cultural goods from foreign cultures, constructing a sense of both strangeness and familiarity with multiple cultures. In our course, we will examine more specifically the translation of cultural goods from Eastern cultures into Western languages, as a way of comprehending the role of translation in establishing new points of contact between East and West, as well as multiple possibilities of partnerships and mutual growth.
After an initial discussion regarding the role on translation in intercultural communication and the understanding of the East by Westeners, we will proceed with case studies centered on 4 different source-cultures and their translations into Western languages, especially English and Portuguese.
