Rossana Melo is a Professor of Cell Biology and Principal Investigator at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), Brazil. She earned her M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Cell Biology from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG, Brazil) and received postdoctoral training from Harvard Medical School, USA. Dr. Melo has been a distinguished scientist with a research productivity grant from the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq) for the last 15 years. She is the leader of the Cell Biology Research Group and her lab at UFJF is actively involved in training undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Melo investigates cellular mechanisms and pathways involved in inflammation and infectious diseases. Her research team studies host-pathogen interactions and secretory and endocytic mechanisms of cells from the immune system, with a focus on eosinophils. Dr. Melo has a special interest in the application of advanced imaging techniques, including nanotechnologies and electron microscopy to the study of cells. She has identified new aspects of the cellular architecture and vesicular trafficking of immune mediators in eosinophils in both health and disease. Her lab also studies the ultrastructure of microorganisms and how cell populations interact with the microenvironment (Cellular Ecology). Dr. Melo acted as a visiting scientist/professor at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard University for many years and is currently a visiting scientist at Harvard School of Public Health. She has established a network of collaborative research with many national and international institutions and has also been dedicated to the organization of science-art exhibitions using microscopic images generated in her studies as a way to spread science.
