The Master’s and/or Doctoral training offered by the Graduate Program in Linguistics (PPG Linguística) is structured around four cycles, with courses offered through the research tracks Linguistics and Cognition (LC) and Language and the Humanities (LH).
The courses within the Theoretical-Analytical, Complementary, and Specific training cycles have a duration of 45 hours and are equivalent to 3 credits each. In the Writing cycle, the Master’s Dissertation is worth 6 credits, while the Doctoral Thesis is worth 12.
Each Master’s student must complete 24 credits throughout the program, of which 6 correspond to the dissertation and 18 to coursework. Among the 6 courses to be taken, there must be at least one from each cycle.
Each Doctoral student must complete 45 credits, 12 of which correspond to the thesis and 33 to coursework. Among the 11 courses taken, there must be at least two from the Theoretical-Analytical cycle and at least one from one of the other cycles.
For students entering as of 2025, the courses within the Theoretical-Analytical, Complementary, and Specific training cycles will have a duration of 60 hours and will be equivalent to 4 credits each. In the Writing cycle, the Master’s Dissertation will be worth 8 credits, and the Doctoral Thesis will be worth 16.
With the new workload, each Master’s student must complete 32 credits throughout the program, 8 of which correspond to the dissertation and 24 to coursework. Among the courses to be taken, there must be at least one from each cycle. In the Doctorate, each student must complete 60 credits, 16 of which correspond to the thesis and 44 to coursework. Among the courses taken, there must be at least two from the Theoretical-Analytical cycle and at least one from one of the other cycles.
