About the Program

Mission and Objectives of the Program

The Graduate Program in Mathematics at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) has the mission of promoting regional and national development through research and teaching in Mathematics. In addition, it aims to improve the quality of mathematics education at all levels, disseminate mathematical advances, encourage children’s and young people’s interest in the exact sciences, and foster the participation of women in research areas such as Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

The objectives of the PPGMat-UFJF are:

  • To stimulate research in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics, both in their theoretical aspects and interdisciplinary applications, strengthening and expanding research groups.
  • To ensure high scientific productivity and international impact of the program’s publications.
  • To train Master’s students with a solid mathematical foundation, capable of entering PhD programs in Brazil and abroad.
  • To contribute to the improvement of mathematics education at all educational levels, encouraging the interest of children and young people through olympiads, lectures, and academic activities, as well as promoting connections between different fields of knowledge.
  • To promote integration between undergraduate and graduate studies, supporting the academic and professional development of students.
  • To attract and support students of different genders, ethnicities, and nationalities, strengthening academic and cultural diversity.
  • To increase the national and international visibility of the program through the organization of events, lectures, and by encouraging scientific dissemination by PPGMat-UFJF researchers, both in small and large-scale events.

As a result of these efforts, the program’s main goal is to consolidate the UFJF Department of Mathematics as a center of academic and scientific excellence.
