The Course:

The type of knowledge involved in the Social Sciences allows a wide field of development of conceptual tools applied to the interpretation and intervention in social reality. The degree in Social Sciences is based on three paradigms of social knowledge: Political Science, Anthropology and Sociology. The articulation of these paradigms focuses not only on theoretical approaches, but, above all, on the experience of implementing research and actions that may have practical results in terms of social performance. Thus, the degree in Social Sciences was created to develop students’ critical thinking, making them able to intervene in the various problems that demand the combination of science and ethical discernment, promoting values that underpin the notion of a common good shared by the members of our society.

Professional prospects:

The social scientist (anthropologist, political scientist or sociologist) can work in the fields of teaching, research and planning. It is this professional’s duty to analyze, propose and participate in processes that trigger the development and improvement of social and political activities and institutions, including activities related to planning, building and evaluating public policies and managing actions in the third sector. One of the privileged fields of work is academic research at college level, as well as a broad range of opinion polls. The study of cultures and ethnic minority groups constitutes today a structured field of action of Anthropology and Sociology, typical of the field of Social Sciences. Regarding teaching, the social scientist can work in high schools and institutions of higher learning.
In summary, the Social Sciences professional is an agent with versatile and pivotal training in analytical procedures and interventions in processes of contemporary society. The Bachelor in Social Sciences may act in the field of education, including teaching Social Sciences at the high school level. He/she can also work as a researcher, either in the academic or non-academic field, work with planning, in consultancy, training and advice in public or private companies, NGOs, governmental bodies, political parties, social movements and similar activities.
