Physics

The Course:

The course has theoretical and practical classes. The research laboratories in Atomic and Molecular Physics, Computational Physics, and Optics and Holography have modern research equipment for the students. By attending the courses, the students can learn about multiple problems, which range from the origin of the universe, turbulence in liquids, the measurement of the Earth’s magnetic field, the application of lasers to biology, and the structure of the matter from elementary particles to complex systems. Through Scientific Initiation scholarships, there is the opportunity to investigate advanced topics on the areas of Cosmology and Gravitation, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Optics and Quantum Field Theory. There are scholarships available for the Master’s and Doctorate degres too. The teaching internship is mandatory for students who want to obtain the Teaching Degree. Teacher training is complemented with supervised practical teaching in high schools. This internship includes activities conducted by the Faculty of Education and uses “João XXIII Application School” as a teaching laboratory.

Professional prospects:

The physicist can apply mathematical, virtual and experimental methods to the solution of a variety of problems. The career prospects are diverse: from atomic theory to the analysis models of the financial market. They can work with basic or applied research, using the laws of the physical world to solve practical issues. They can work in industrial areas, conducting experiments and analysis, and in the financial market, proposing mathematical models for the analysis of the stock exchanges. However, the largest field is teaching. The Teaching Degree in Physics is preferentially related to the teaching and dissemination of scientific knowledge. This can be done either in formal schools or through new forms of scientific education, such as the development of software and other learning materials.
