Environmental and Sanitary Engineering

The Course:

Its main feature is multidisciplinary, since itbrings together various fields of knowledge. It encompassessubjects from the Mathematical Sciences, such as Mathematics,Physics and Chemistry, and from the Biological Sciences, such asSanitary and Environmental Biology, and Microbiology. Thosesubjects are alternated with those regarding basicsanitation, the environment, water resources, environmentalgeology, hydrology, topography, and hydraulics. Theinternship is mandatory, as well asthe submission of a final paper at the end of the course. It offersstudents the possibility to act in researchcenters. Throughout the course, students also practice inseveral thematic workshops focused on issuessuch as watersheds, environmentalsanitation and the deployment ofenvironmental control equipment.

Professional prospects:

The sanitation and environmental engineer works with planning, environmental management and sanitary and environmental technology. In his/her job, the engineer designs and monitors the implementation of infrastructure, operational facilities, and potable water supply services, sewage system, urban cleaning, solid waste management, drainage, urban stormwater management and urbanization. This professional assesses and analyzes the environmental impact of endeavors on natural ecosystems and proposes actions to preserve, conserve and restore the environment. He/she coordinates and supervises work teams, carries out scientific and technological research and technical and economic feasibility studies; performs and monitors construction projects and technical services; does surveys, and gives expert advice by writing reports and giving opinions. In his/her regular activities, he/she takes into account ethics, safety, legislation and socio-environmental impacts.
