Civil Engineering

The Course:

The activities are divided into lectures andpractical classes. The internship is mandatory and done in private, public and engineering companies in general. It is possible to deepen the study through teaching assistance projects, the “Junior Company”, Scientific Initiation and researchfields. The main areas of expertiseinvolved are Calculus of Structures (determinationof internal forces on elements ofcivil construction, such as buildings, bridges, etc., andtheir dimensioning, in order to ensure safety, economy and aesthetics); Hydraulics (planning, design and construction of water-savingbuildings); Geotechnics (soil behavior incivil construction, involving buildingfoundations, dams, inclines, embankments, soilcompactation, drainage and containment structures);Sanitation (techniques for the preservation of the qualityof the environment, comprising water andsewage treatment, as well as pollution control); Transportation (design and construction of highways and railroads, navigation routes, ports, airports, road and rail terminals); and Building Construction(study of the construction techniques from the foundationto the finishing, as well as the study ofthe characteristics of the materials used).

Professional prospects:

The civil engineer can perform several activities. The field of action covers design and consulting companies. It also includes construction companies and contractors, government-owned companies, and education or research institutions. The student may become a design engineer, generally established in urban centers doing designs related to different areas of expertise. When becoming a civil engineer, the professional is responsible for the implementation of projects such as dams, roads, buildings and residences. The supervision engineer may be hired by a client, such as the Government, to supervise the work performed by a third party. The consulting engineer, in turn, is responsible for giving opinions and proposing solutions regarding technical issues related to the project or performance of the construction. If ones chooses to be an engineer who works with teaching and research, he/she will teach to new professionals and develop new technologies.
