Professor of the Graduate Program in History at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora. Doctor of History by the University of New Hampshire (2001). Researcher at CNPq and Our State Scientist (FAPERJ). He was a Professor at the History Institute (UFRJ). He did post-doctoral studies in the Department of History at Brown University (2007-2008). He was a visiting professor at Brown University (2011) and the Elliot School of International Affairs at George Washington University (2018). Visiting researcher at the Gilder Lehrman Institute of Latin American History/New York Historical Society (2005), the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition/Yale University (2015), the John Carter Brown Library (2017) and the Max-Planck-Institut für europäishe Rechtgeschicht (2018). He is an associate researcher at the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington and the International Center for Jefferson Studies. Studies the relations between federalism, republicanism and slavery in the Americas, with emphasis on comparative research on wars, slavery and nation-state building.
