The IMACS – International Master in Cinema Studies – is an international network comprising 19 universities, including 16 European universities, 1 Canadian university, and 1 Brazilian university, UFJF.
The objective of the network is to enable master’s students from partner universities to complete the second and third semesters of their master’s degree by earning credits abroad.
This initiative promotes the exchange of students and professors conducting research in cinema and audiovisual studies, enhances research development, and fosters the internationalization of the Postgraduate Program in Arts, Culture, and Languages (PPGACL).
IMACS is available only at the master’s level and does not constitute a joint degree program; therefore, students enrolled at UFJF will receive their master’s degree from UFJF.
The IMACS/UFJF coordination office will issue a certificate to be attached to the diploma, confirming that the student completed coursework at foreign universities.
Participating Universities:
Program Structure:
Students wishing to join the International Master in Cinema Studies (IMACS) must go through the regular master’s selection process of the Postgraduate Program in Arts, Culture, and Languages (PPG-ACL), be approved, and be enrolled in PPG-ACL. Their supervisor must be a member of the IMACS faculty (see the list of faculty members below). The supervisor must approve the project and the student’s participation in the
international program. The student’s proposal will be evaluated by a committee appointed by the IMACS/UFJF Coordination.
Students begin the master’s program at the start of the academic year, attending the first semester at UFJF. The following year, they travel to take IMACS courses at two universities of their choice, previously indicated during the internal selection process and subject to approval by the IMACS international committee.
This internal selection takes place during the first semester of the year. The final result will depend on the approval of the IMACS international committee, during its annual meeting held in the second semester, which will determine the universities in which the student must enroll to attend classes in the following year.
At the end of this year, during which the student attends courses at two universities from the IMACS network, they return to UFJF to complete their master’s dissertation within the regular timeframe, fulfilling the credit requirements for graduation. Students are not allowed to spend the entire year abroad (i.e., the second and third semesters of the master’s program) at the same university. They must enroll in two distinct institutions, previously approved by the IMACS international coordination.
PPG-ACL also welcomes international students from other universities in the IMACS network. We have previously received students from German, Italian, French, and Dutch universities, which enriches and renews the academic environment of our postgraduate program and fosters the exchange of ideas, experiences, and research references among our students.
The regulations governing the International Master in Cinema Studies within the Postgraduate Program in Arts, Culture, and Languages follow a specific statute approved by the PPG-ACL academic board.
Scholarships:
There are currently no scholarships available for students enrolled in the IMACS program.
UFJF does not cover expenses related to housing, food, health insurance, or travel (airfare and/or ground transportation) during the program.
Students must have the financial means to participate in the IMACS master’s program.
Languages and Courses:
Students must be proficient in the language of instruction of the university where they intend to enroll.
Courses are taught in the official language of each country, except in German and Dutch universities, which offer courses in English.
Similarly, at UFJF, courses are taught in Portuguese for foreign students.
Students wishing to refresh their foreign language skills before traveling should contact the Office of International Relations (DRI) at UFJF and the university’s language course sector, which offers English, French, Spanish, Italian, and German.
Foreign students interested in learning Portuguese at UFJF should also seek guidance from DRI.
