Classes

All classes are in Portuguese. However, for foreign students, if needed, there are pedagogical interactions (questions and answers) in English and assigned texts in English.


Master’s Degree Classes:

– Mandatory general classes:

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY: Overview of research methodology in Psychology. Basic concepts. Rating scales. Sampling techniques. Hypothesis testing. Scientific writing. Hours of instruction: 3 credits

METHODS AND TECHNIQUES OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH: The planning of qualitative research. The development of the research project and its methodological plan. The ethical issues involved in qualitative research. Criteria for inclusion and exclusion of sources of different natures. Different forms of qualitative and interpretative research and its evaluation criteria. Limits and possibilities of the different qualitative research methods in Psychology. Observation, interviews, questionnaires and document analysis as methodological resources. Hours of instruction: 2 credits

METHODS AND TECHNIQUES OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH: Limits of empirical research. Notions of probability as a measure of uncertainty. Population and sampling. Descriptive statistics: central tendency and dispersion measurements and graphic and tabular presentation. Inferential statistics: numerical and categorical variables, inference measurements: p value and confidence intervals, comparison of means and proportions, correlation and regression, and multivariate statistics. Hours of instruction: 2 credits

ADVANCED RESEARCH SEMINAR: Current issues related to Psychology presented as seminars. Hours of instruction: 5 credits

THEORIES OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL-EDUCATIONAL PROCESSES: Basic issues of human development. Theories of human development and its relationship with social-educational processes. Human development, health and social-educational contexts. Hours of instruction: 3 credits

Research area: Psychosocial Processes in Health

PSYCHOSOCIAL THEORIES AND HEALTH: Health and disease theories and concepts. Epistemological, methodological and ethical aspects of Psychosocial theories in health. Risk, vulnerability and prevention in health. Hours of instruction: 3 credits

Research area: History and Philosophy of Psychology

PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE AND PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH: Language, theory and argumentation. Induction, inference and the problem of the method. Philosophy of science and psychology: logical positivism, Popper, Kuhn, Feyerabend and postmodernism. Hours of instruction: 3 credits

In addition to all of the Master’s Degree classes, the PhD student should additionally attend the following classes.

– Mandatory general courses:

SCIENTIFIC WRITING: advanced scientific writing; preparation and publication of articles; the preparation and submission of an article. Hours of instruction: 2 credits

REFERATAS IN PSYCHOLOGY: Presentation and critical analysis by students and PhD faculty of topics related to the theses and research areas of the course. Hours of instruction: 8 credits
