Specific admission process for foreign students:
The student must complete the registration form available on the PPG Psychology website (https://www.ufjf.br/ppgpsicologia/) indicating the research area and the supervisor. Students should make prior contact with the professor via e-mail in order to confirm the latter’s availability for supervision.
Documents:
– A copy of the curriculum vitae;
– Three copies of the research project. The research project can be written in English, Spanish or Portuguese and should have the following structure: a page with title and statement of the research area and intended supervisor, a summary, an abstract, an introduction section, a method section and references. The project should be written in Times New Roman font size 12, double spacing between paragraphs, with margins of 2.5 cm. The text should adhere to the APA 6th edition standards. The maximum limit of pages for the project is ten (10) pages, counting from the Introduction to the References section. If English isn’t the students’ native language, the applicant must submit one of the following certificates: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) in the Paper Based Test mode with the minimum score of 550 points or in the Computer Based Test mode with the minimum score of 213 points, or in the Internet-Based Test mode with the minimum score of 80 points; Test of English for International Communication – TOEIC (minimum 605 points); and International English Language Test – IELTS (minimum 6.0 points). Note: the documents cited here only refer to those required for approval concerning academic merit during the selection process. Any other documents required to enter Brazil (e.g. visa) should be provided if the applicant passes the selection process.
Selection process:
First Stage:
– Analysis of the Research Project. The evaluation of the research project will have the following criteria: originality, appropriateness and sufficiency of theoretical background/literature review, the relevance of the research problem, the adequacy of the proposed method to the research problem, the correction of the writing and the adequacy of the project to the topics studied by the supervisor (lacking the last criterion, the applicant shall be eliminated). The Evaluation will be done by the supervisor and two professors of the same research area chosen by the applicant. The Selection Committee will nominate the professors for the evaluation. The project will be approved if the average of the grades given by the three evaluators is greater than or equal to 70.0 (seventy).
– Interview based on the Curriculum Vitae. At the discretion of the selection committee, two to three professors may be appointed, to interview the applicant in order to assign a supervisor who will help the student in the second stage of the selection process. The interview is of disqualifying character and will be based on assessing the suitability of the profile (education, publications and participation in events), the research project and the interests of the applicant in relation to the research area and possible supervisors. This interview also aims to assess whether the applicant has the minimum necessary knowledge of the Portuguese language in order to attend the graduate school in PPG-Psychology and may thus include questions in Portuguese. The interview will be via videoconference or equivalent at a previously arranged date and time.
Second Stage:
– Research Project Development (Probationary stage). After approval in the first stage, the Selection Committee together with the supervisor appointed for the applicant shall provide a period of time for the duration of this stage, which may vary from one to four months. This stage is conducted online. The applicant approved in the first stage of the selection process will be supervised by a professor to plan and to oversee the development of a Research Project during the second stage. This professor shall be the applicant’s supervisor during the course, should the applicant be approved. The analysis of the Research Project shall occur after the time stipulated by the Selection Committee and will be used for qualification and classification purposes. The Evaluation will be done by the supervisor and two professors of the same research area chosen by the applicant. The Selection Committee will nominate the professors for the evaluation. To be approved, the research project should get a score higher than 70.0 points from at least two professors and have an average of the three grades, greater than or equal to 70.0 points.
Notes:
Once approved in the second stage of the selection process the applicants will be approved for admission to the graduate program in Psychology of UFJF early in the semester or up to 8 months from the date of publication of the final result by the Selection Committee. If the applicant fails to provide the necessary documentation to enter the country and enroll in that time period, he/she shall apply again and go through a new selection process.
Method of admission via PEC-PG Exchange
The PPG Psychology also accepts foreign students who seek to enter through the PEC-PG scholarship program of the Brazilian government (http://www.capes.gov.br/cooperacao-internacional/multinacional/pec-pg) or another agency. In this case, the applicants with scholarships granted before the selection (e.g. PEC-PG) must prove proficiency in English (as requested above) and go through only the first stage of the selection process mentioned above (analysis of research project and interview). These requirements being met, the applicant will be approved for admission to the graduate program in Psychology of UFJF early in the next semester or up to 8 months from the date of publication of the final result by the Selection Committee. If the applicant fails to provide the necessary documentation to enter the country and enroll in that time period, he/she shall apply again and go through a new selection process.
