Electronic Ballasts Systems

Electronic ballasts, also called solid-state ballasts, are those power electronic converters used to supply discharge lamps. The modern age of electronic ballasts began with the introduction of power bipolar transistors with low storage time, allowing supply of fluorescent lamps at frequencies of several kilohertz and increasing lamp luminous efficacy by operating at these high frequencies.
Later, electronic ballasts become very popular with the development of low-cost power MOSFETs, whose unique features make them very attractive for implementing solid-state ballasts. The main benefits of electronic ballasts are increased lamp and ballast overall efficiency, increased lamp life, reduction of ballast size and weight, and improvement in lighting quality. This chapter gives a general overview of the more important topics related to this type of power converters

Monitoring and Control of Discrete Event Systems: Some Key Results and Recent Research

Discrete event systems are dynamic systems with discrete state spaces and event-driven dynamics. This talk will present an overview of key results on monitoring and control of discrete event systems, along with some recent research directions. The theory of supervisory control will first be considered. Some key results of supervisory control will be reviewed. Recent research directions in modular control will be described in the context of a manufacturing automation example. The problem of event diagnosis in partially-observed discrete event systems will then be presented and a solution methodology described. Finally, the talk will conclude with some recent results on dynamic sensor activation in the context of control or diagnosis problems.
