The UFJF Graduate Program in Communication is rated 5 by Capes and with Master and Doctorate courses. You can research into the areas of Communication and Society by Communication Processes and Social Interfaces and Networks, Languages, Memories.

The PPGCOM/UFJF had been authorized by Capes in 2006 and it began its activities in March 2007 with Master’s classes. The full course was offered in 2019 with the implementation of the Doctorate course. Both courses are offered on a face-to-face basis and are open annually.

The UFJF Graduate Program in Communication was the first with a Master’s degree in the area in the interior of Minas Gerais and, until 2024, was the only Doctorate offered outside the state capital. PPGCOM proposal is to provide quality training to a geographical region polarized by Juiz de Fora, including municipalities in other states, such as Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Espírito Santo, among others.

Research and studies developed in the program aim to combine reflective perspectives and intervention in the field of Communication based on continuous interaction between theory and practice.

To this end, PPGCOM/UFJF currently with 13 research groups: Asymmetries – Center for the study of symbolic and material mediations of digital technologies, Comcime – Communication, City and Memory, Communication, Art and Media Literacy, Communication, Identity and Citizenship, Expanded Connections, DIZ – Discourses and Aesthetics of Difference, Iconicity Research Group (IRG), Digital Media Laboratory, LEAUD – Laboratory for the Study of Languages and Expressions of Architecture, Urbanism and Design, Namídia – Media Narratives and Dialogies, Journalism and Audiovisual Center, Sensus – Communication and Discourses and Sinestelas.

The program also develops extension projects and actions in conjunction with the research of teachers and students, with the aim of not only bringing research results to the society but of dialogue with groups outside the university to build bridges and knowledge, highlighting and enhancing the social impact of the research developed.

PPGCOM’s journal is Lumina, published online every four months on the SEER platform. It features articles, dossiers, reviews, research reports and interviews by Brazilian and international authors related to the field of Communication studies. Lumina is currently rated A4 on the Qualis Capes, based on its output in the 2017-2020 quadrennium. In addition to the journal, since 2019 PPGCOM has had the Communication and Society label in partnership with UFJF Publisher.

Graduates from the program work as professors and technicians at the following federal educational institutions: UFJF, UFV, UFSJ, UFOP, UFMG, UFRB, UFRR, IFET (Barbacena, Santos Dumont and Muriaé). PPGCOM graduates also work as teachers on the undergraduate courses in the area of Communication in the Zona da Mata Mineira.
